Hello! I’m Türkü — a hospitality industry-lifer who has seen many of the vibrant, hidden-away corners of cities I love turn into places that feel very icky. Having spent my professional life working with restaurants, retail developers, tourism boards, hotels, etc, I’ve decided I need to educate myself on the issue of gentrification.
The Echo Project is an ecosystemic research project exploring the challenges and opportunities around this subject; seeking to understand how we can cultivate happier, healthier and more equitable neighbourhoods. To find out a bit more on how I intend to do this and why, check out my first post.
I’ll be writing journal entries on Substack once or twice a month and most of these will consist of interviews with interesting people across a range of disciplines. The Echo Project adopts an ecological cybernetics worldview, so one of its core principles is the study of the many interdependences that impact neighbourhoods. I’m under no illusion that such a feat can be achieved from the perspective or capacity of one person (or even a few people), which is why I’m adopting a methodology that prioritises conversations and serendipity over hypotheses and precision.

Once I have a decent archive of interviews, I intend to publish them online under a Creative Commons license, giving others the opportunity to use them for any not-for-profit purposes as they see fit. If you think I should be interviewing you or someone you know for The Echo Project, please get in touch.
